Salamander Resort: Middleburg, VA

HIGHLIGHTS all begin once in the hotel…  Salamander has one of the most innovative spas I have seen, as Sheila Johnson first based her dream by wanting a state of the art spa in the VA Hunt Country… she more than excelled with this dream.

DINING: Todd Gray’s restaurant that he oversees, HARRIGAN’S, locally sourced, seasonal menu, great wine list! New American cuisine with a modern twist/presentation, i.e. deconstructed soups, and as we said “even the cheese plate was extra special!”

Biggest tip is do not stay on the first floor which is called “SUMMER” unless you are at the resort with a pet. This is the only floor where dogs are allowed as there is a patio so dogs can get outside easily. (It seemed as if one dog on the hall started barking others would follow suit so hope you don’t have a yapping one next door!) Not a big issue but just an FYI…  $90 for up to two pets in a room for their entire stay.

EQUESTRIAN CENTER: Over the top! $75 per day for horse to stay. Full service: use of private pasture, stalls mucked, etc. Guests can add on other services if needed like grooming, clean tack etc. Top of the line padding in stalls, riding ring has state of the art footing. Visitors can do private events in the facility (has a meeting room.) FIRST CLASS all the way around!

The resort has lovely PUBLIC SPACES. Our favorite was the cozy library that was stocked with lots of old books, great writing tables, cozy sitting areas. We can see this spot being a popular in the winter. The Salamander is a fantastic getaway about 2 hours from Richmond, VA and about an hour (without traffic) from Washington D.C.
