In search of the perfect mother-daughter trip? Look no further than Italy – the stunning gardens and scenic views of Lake Como are the perfect place to relax whether it’s a boat ride that passes by historic towns and villas or a hike up the mountainside that is well worth the breathtaking views. Then, just a drive away, you can be in Florence with its iconic architecture, endless gelato, artisan shops and leather school.

After my graduation this past May, my mom and I set off on a quick six-day trip with time split between Lake Como and Florence. Upon our arrival in Lake Como, I was blown away by Grand Hotel Tremezzo, an Art Nouveau palace on the waters edge. Located in the heart of the lake, the hotel views are unparalleled with the Swiss alps in one direction and the town of Bellagio directly across the water. Definitely not a bad view to wake up to!

Our first day we were able to take a short walk from the hotel to see the Villa Carlotta and its amazing gardens. It is a must see! We then took a boat tour, the best way to travel around to the various lakeside towns and a good introduction to the area. The next day after a long hike, we ate freshly made pizza by the pool and hit the spa, which is a villa they have recently renovated. Gorgeous views and great staff left us feeling rejuvenated.

After three restful nights, good eats and lots of exploring, we did the morning drive to Florence. We stayed at the Portrait Firenze – overlooking the Arno River and steps away from the Ponte Vecchio. The bathroom alone blew me away – it was a dream with its free- standing tub and marble countertops. After dropping our bags, we decided to jump right in and climbed the Duomo. One of my favorite parts of the trip had to be watching the local artisans show us their craft – whether it is was the leather school, Florentine paper or stonework.

I would go into details about the food, but it was all so good that I have no complaints. You cannot go wrong with the food in Florence. I promise – everything is delicious! We ate enough meat and cheese for an entire year. Our lunch at J.K. Place was one of my favorite settings as it overlooks Santa Maria Novella.

If you are looking for anything leather – whether it be a bag or a jacket – Florence is the place to find it. It’s the perfect mother-daughter shopping destination. So many great finds at the street markets or for something more special you can always get a custom-made jacket to last you a lifetime.

Overall, Italy is easy to get to with great food, shopping, views and exploring, so for all the mothers and daughters out there who have not experienced Italy, make it next on your travel bucket list!
