For years, I’ve dreamed of escaping the Virginia winter blues and planting myself and the CTTW office under the golden glow of the tropics for a few weeks in January. This year, thanks to modern technology and an exciting, newly discovered island to explore, my dream finally came true.
Canouan Island has been called the best island you’ve never heard of, and I would agree. One of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets, this five-square-mile slice of heaven in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is refreshingly quiet and still relatively untouched (but not for long). It’s just the kind of place many of our clients and I like. The fact that it boasts Canouan Estate, a stellar collection of stand-alone villas (I rented a two-bedroom villa), and the newly renovated Mandarin Oriental Canouan resort only sweetens the appeal.
People come to Canouan to escape the cold and the daily grind. Golfers come to play the par-72 Jim Fazio course, one of the top 10 courses in the world. Set on sloping hills along the ocean’s edge, the views are just as dramatic as the holes. There are also three tennis courts and a complimentary kids’ program on property to keep the little ones entertained while mom and dad relax or swim or hike…
One of the best things about Canouan is its close proximity to other islands, making for fun day-tripping on the water. Every day offers another adventure. For those who have tired of the BVIs, set your sights on Canouan. You could swim with sea turtles at Tobago Cay, a wildlife preserve with gorgeous reefs just a 25-minute boat ride away. Or sail to Petit St. Vincent for lunch at the resort there. Sparrows on Union Island is another favorite, and there’s always Mustique’s Cotton House beach bar, Mick Jagger’s hangout. Much to my satisfaction, I caught a glimpse of that recognizable rocker across the dining room, before returning happily to my Canouan Island home, where the only stars to be found were in the sky.
To experience the authentic, unspoiled Canouan, don’t wait too long. The secret is out, and plans are underway for new developments.
